HOLLYWOOD (Jan. 28, 2010) – “Jackie Chan in Shinjuku Incident” – opening nationwide in select U.S. theaters on Feb. 5 – brings together for the first time two of Hong Kong’s biggest box office draws: international action star Jackie Chan and acclaimed director Derek Yee. Despite having acted in almost 100 movies for more than three decades, Chan presents a dark, dramatic side in “Jackie Chan in Shinjuku Incident” never before seen by his audiences.
“There are some films which are purely for entertainment, and in other films you can learn something more meaningful. I think this is one of those films,” said Chan. “I’ve wanted to do this project for the last few years. I hope people can accept me playing a good guy and a bad guy all in one role.”
This hard-boiled, action-packed drama starring and executive produced by Chan represents the acting event of his lifetime in his most gritty movie to date. Chan plays “Nick” an illegal Chinese immigrant trying to survive on the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) run streets of Shinjuku Tokyo in the 1990's where he struggles with entering and exiting a life of crime in an attempt to make a better life for his people. This passion project pools the top talents from Hong Kong, mainland China and Japan and takes audiences to exotic locations in Japan, and Suzhou and Changchun in China.
“This project has probably taken me the longest time from the germination of an idea to the completion of a film, but it’s more because the research was so fascinating and the story was evolving all the time,” said Yee. “I first came across news reports of Chinese migrants in Japan back in the 90’s. Although very little was known of these communities because they were illegal and stayed very much underground, I wanted to present a Chinese viewpoint of their lives – it’s not a real story but an adaptation of what my research revealed.”
The film features a very strong cast of award-winning actors in supporting roles, including Asian heartthrob Daniel Wu, whose character "Joe" totally transforms from timid to terrifying as Nick’s fellow villager turned illegal immigrant; the beautiful Fan Bing Bing who plays the strong yet sweet, street smart Lily, one of Nick’s love interests; the lovely Xu Jinglei as Yuko, Nick’s girlfriend from China who goes to Japan to study and is never heard from again, prompting Nick to make the journey himself; Masaya Kato as the ambitious Eguchi, a mob boss and Yuko’s husband; and Naoto Takenaka as police detective Kitano, who develops a begrudging respect for the film’s protagonist after Nick saves his life.
“Jackie Chan in Shinjuku Incident” – rated R, in Chinese language with English subtitles – will play in select U.S. cities nationwide for two-to-three weeks starting on Feb. 5, including New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Honolulu, Houston, Ridgefield Park and Seattle. To find theater locations and buy tickets, go to www.shinjuku-movie.com/theatres.html. The first 500 filmgoers to watch the movie at each of the AMC Theatre locations nationwide will receive a limited edition “Jackie Chan in Shinjuku Incident” poster in Chinese or English languages (limited to stock on hand, first come, first served).
